If there’s one thing to look forward to in Perth’s thankfully short-lived winters, it’s Sunday roasts. Yes, we know you can get them any time of year, but when it’s cold outside, the combination of the juicy meat, silky smooth gravy, light and fluffy Yorkies, and supersized sides just hits different.
Here, arranged in order of price, are our Perth picks for where you can find solace in the form of a Sunday roast.
South Beach Hotel, South Fremantle – $25
South Beach Hotel is a true-blue Aussie pub with a sweeping wrap-around terrace, raucous sports bar, and a polished wooden bar top that’s been used as a perch for pints of Swan since 1903. It’s a Freo staple, popular seven days a week – but never more so than on Sundays, when this local boozer is loaded with locals enjoying live music, cocktail specials and one of Perth’s best budget-friendly roasts. Plates are piled high with weekly changing meats, paired with generous portions of roast veggies, gravy and a Yorkie.

SUBSCRIBE NOWSt Brigid Bar, Doubleview – $25 to $30
Given the Irish penchant for Sunday roasts and Guinness, you would expect a bar named after Ireland’s patron saint of booze to be pretty good at both. Doubleview’s neighbourhood haunt St Brigid Bar does not disappoint. There’s classic beef or mushroom roasts to be enjoyed in front of the roaring outdoor fire with a pint in hand. Both renditions come with crispy roast potatoes, glazed carrots, spears of broccolini, creamy mash, braised onion, red wine jus and, like all great roasts, a Yorkshire pudding.
251 Scarborough Beach Road
Johnny Fox’s, Northbridge – $26
Stepping into Johnny Fox’s is like teleporting into the heart of Dublin. From the lucky-green facade and cosy timber interiors to the effortless craic from the staff, everything about this Northbridge pub is thoroughly Gaelic – and the Sunday roast is no exception. Choose from always-available roast beef or a rotating second protein option. Or double down and order a little of both. They don’t skimp on the sides either, with seasonal veg, roast potato, mash and lashings of gravy.
205 James Street, Northbridge
Fibber McGee’s, Leederville – $28
Banish all thoughts of squawking drunk backpackers and tacky Guinness paraphernalia, Fibber McGee’s is the real deal. Fibber’s has been steeped in classic Irish charm since it opened in 1998. And over two decades later, the traditional Irish pub grub here is as satisfying as ever. Whet the whistle with traditional Irish soda bread before tucking into a choice of turkey, lamb or beef alongside vegetables, stuffing, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy.
711 Newcastle Street, Leederville
Edward & Ida’s Northbridge – $32
From the veteran team behind Foxtrot Unicorn and Nieuw Ruin Edward & Ida’s serves stepped up pub fare in a retro-style venue. With a fireplace out back, a cosy parlour lined with taxidermy and a buzzy front bar, there’s no more fitting spot to enjoy a winter meal. On the menu is roasted pork belly with fennel-spiced crispy skin, apple sauce and a salad of date, fennel and hazelnut. Not feeling up to a full roast? Order the beef pastie, curried Scotch egg or one of their perfectly flaky pies.
269 William Street, Northbridge
Bertie, Bassendean – $33
Owner, expat and veteran bartender James Connolly’s a-little-bit-British ethos drives the menu at Bertie. Their weekend roast has all the trimmings, and is made with the freshest local ingredients. It’s a bargain at $33, with a rotating roasted meat, seasonal veg, crispy roast potatoes, a fluffy Yorkshire pudding and liberal amounts of gravy. There’s a similarly impressive vegetarian option too. Save room for dessert (or should we say pudding). Bertie’s sticky date ice cream sandwich served with rich caramel sauce is a must-try.
77 Old Perth Road, Bassendean
Daph’s, Leederville – $70
Sunday roasts at Daph’s are a three-course affair. Courtesy of chef Pepe Dart, the menu starts with crispy pork belly bites with a moreish chilli caramel and an Asian salad. Next, rump cap is roasted over an open fire and served surrounded by fluffy duck-fat-roasted potatoes, bubbling cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage, smashed carrot and charred broccolini. Before it arrives at your table, silky smooth veal jus is drizzled over the entire plate, amping up the flavour of each bite. To finish, there’s apple and rhubarb crumble with mandarin ice cream. Arrive hungry.
